July 12, 2003 - It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to expect THQ to follow up its successful Smackdown sequel with a fifth installment. It is one of the best-selling franchises there are for both PlayStation and PlayStation 2 after all, and is considered by many to be the best wrestling game in the US for any platform. Despite that knowledge, however, confirmation of the next game in the series has been pretty much non-existent. Until now, that is.

Tentatively titled WWE Smackdown 5, the next version of Yukes' and THQ's wrestler was confirmed today by several THQ representatives. "It's coming out in fall 2003," said one representative. "We don't have an exact month yet, but definitely in the fall season."

As expected, details were sketchy, though THQ was able to confirm several of the game's forthcoming elements. Including the fact that several new wrestlers who have never been in a WWE game before will make appearances (including a huge international superstar) and that all previous game modes should return for the next iteration. Unfortunately, other particulars have yet to be revealed, and information pertaining to rosters, story mode, and other such things were not discussed.
